Improving water productivity and livelihoods in the Jordan Valley

We are here to help improve water productivity and livelihoods in the Jordan Valley.

Are you a farmer looking for to learn and enhance water related procedures within you farm? If yes, then improving water productivity and livelihoods in the Jordan Valley Project by IHE offers you good opportunities.

Partners & Donors

This project is implemented by IHE:

IHE Delft Institute for Water Education is the largest international graduate water education facility in the world and is based in Delft, the Netherlands. The Institute confers fully accredited MSc degrees, and PhD degrees in collaboration with partners. Over 23,000 water professionals from more than 190 mainly developing countries and countries in transition were educated at the Institute.

Summary of Project Benefits

  • More efficient and equitable use of recycled wastewater and brackish groundwater in agriculture.
  • By training farmers to improve water productivity, water productivity in the region is expected to improve.
  • The wastewater treatment plants will be operated optimally, as far as the currently available plants and their capacity will allow. A plan for reuse of the effluent will be presented to stakeholders/planners/decision makers.
  • The JVA/WAJ and WUA will have additional knowledge and skills to promote.
  • The operation of brackish groundwater desalination installations in the study area will improve, in terms of energy consumption and overall efficiency.
  • The importance of various water sources for livelihoods will be described and awareness among stakeholders raised. Feasibility of water sharing/water markets will be described.

Project Duration

The programme runs from 2020-2022.

Project Details

Improving water productivity and livelihoods in the Jordan Valley by using recycled wastewater and brackish groundwater in agriculture.

The project focus is on the North-Shuna, in particular the region around the North-Shuna Wastewater Treatment Plants. In addition, the project will study the (smaller) area downstream from the Tal al Mantah treatment plant for wastewater reuse. A training on brackish groundwater desalination targets farmers from the entire Jordan Valley, but in practice most farmers who use brackish groundwater and located in South-Shuna.

Your Commitment

  • Follow training (extension, sharing results) on water productivity and on brackish groundwater desalination for improving their operations to increase water productivity, improve overall efficiency and reduce energy consumption.
  • To give access to researcher to test the use of treated wastewater for irrigation.
