GlobalGPA Certification PDF Print E-mail
In response to consumer and the principal of "certified once accepted everywhere", EurepGAP started in 1997 as an initiative of retailers belonging to the Euro-Retailer Produce Working Group (EUREP). Then it turned to "GlobalGap".
It has subsequently evolved into an equal partnership of agricultu5ral producers and their retail customers.
The Mission is to develop widely accepted standards and procedures for the global certification of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). GlobalGAP is a series of sector specific farm certification standards.
These standards can be divided up into three groups:
- Technical: one objective is to use as few chemical pest control product as possible so as to minimize the impact of residues on man and the environment.
- Hygienic :these standards consist of measures to guarantee that the harvested crops are not contaminated either bacteriologically or physically
- Working environment: these are designed to prevent social abuses of agricultural workers.
GlobalGAP ensures integrity, transparency and harmonization of global agricultural standards.
It includes the requirement for safe food, worker health, safety and welfare, environmental and animal welfare issues.
GlobalGAP members include retailers, producers/farmers and associate members from the input and service side of agriculture.
Governance is by sector specific GlobalGAP Steering Committees which are chaired by an independent Chairperson.
Both the standard and the certification system are approved by the Technical and Standards Committees working in each product sector.
The normative document for certification, "GlobalGAP Fruit and Vegetables", has been developed from a world-wide group of representatives from all stages in the fruit and vegetable supply chain.
